I liked the Appalchian & Ohio. They operated the CSX Cowen Sub in Central WV from March of 2005 to June of 2006. CSX put the sub up for lease in decemebr of 2004 and had several interested companies but ended up settling with WATCO. WATCO created the A&O, purchased 20 SD50's from NRE (17 UP, 2 Conrail/NS, 1 C&NW) and 5 BAR GP38-3's.
Rumors about what created the fallout between WATCO and CSX go both ways....One was that the SD50's were in horrible shape when NRE delivered and put the A&O way behind repairing them and CSX refused to supply enough hoppers to move the coal and therefore strangled the A&O to death.
The other rumor was that CSX was suffering from a serious hopper car shortage, therefore couldn't supply cars to the A&O quick enough. (Althought CSX had over 300 hoppers in storage at the time on the West Virginia Central near Elkins...which actually branches off of the Cowen sub well south of Grafton, WV.
Anyways, CSX told WATCO to pack up and leave, and so they did. CSX has part ownership in the Four Rivers Company which operated the Paducah & Louisville and the Evansville Western. The Four Rivers company began operations on the Cowen sub using 4 sets of P&L GP40-3/RoadSlug sets and a pair of former CEFX SD90's. Local railfans still call the line the "A&O" but really it's just CSX again......CSX left a bitter taste in a lot of former railroad employees mouths over the rise and fall of WATCO's A&O.

Does it count if my "fallen flag" is just a caracature of it's former self?
The Belfast & Moosehead Lake RR used to be a real RR, but now it's a tourist line.
I mean, it great that it's being preserved and all, but it's sad that it isn't a working road any more.

I agree that it is sad that some railroads are now just tourist, but if thats the only way for them to exist and bring in revenue then that's ok with me.

I heard Yukon & Whitepass are actually reviving it's system. They recently refinanced and are working to regain independence. Thats all I heard about them.

How about Illinois Central and/or Gulf Mobile & Ohio as part of the Fallen Flags. They are both mainly east of the Mississippi River.
