What kind of range do they have because i have a little shortline by me that is a mile away from my house, would I be able to pick it p at my house?

It depends on what scanner you get and what anteanna you got. My dads scanner could probably reach up to 20 miles. But yea the cheapest anteanna you get could reach up to 5 miles probably. Is the shortline signaled? If not then you wont here them or know where there at.

I heard this many years ago on Tehachapi Loop.An eastbound(south) ribbonrail train had passed the loop and was slowly heading toward tunnel 10 when it stalled. This was heard on the scanner:"This is extra 35xx East. I've stalled just below tunnel #10".Reply: "Why don't you just double the hill?" Answer: "I'm a ribbonrail train!" Reply:"Oh". The train got restarted and continued on its way.It must have made the summit as I heard nothing further on the subject.

I heard an argument over the scanner a few days back. Q***: Q*** to dispatcher Dispatcher: Dispatcher over Q***: I cant see the signal could you tell me what it is? Dispatcher: Im not there I cant see the signal. I got you lined up but it doesnt mean you have a clear block Q***: Well I cant see it and we are stopped here at **** Dispatcher: Well get a man on the ground and find out. Im trying to run a dang railroad here not try to figure out what color a signal is!!
