I own three Lionel Postwar J-Class locomotives. One is an on going fixer-uper that I got at a garage sale. One I bought from a widow whose husband used to collect trains, and the other I picked up at a train show for $1,100.

I rode behind N&W 611 once on a fantrip from Charlotte to Ashville via Saluda grade. We had 20 cars with 2 SD40-2s and 1 SD40 as helpers. At the bottom of Saluda, the train was taken apart with the diesels taking up 15 cars and the J hauling the last 5.The train put on a great show pulling us up the 4.7% grade. The train stalled near the summit, but got started again with no help. This part was AWESOME! It was a fantastic trip.I built my entire vacation around this trip in 1992,travelling from L.A. on Amtrak.I also rode the Western Maryland scenic Railroad on this trip. This was before they got steam so I rode behind an FPA4,RS3 combo.I also got my first RDC ride on the old B&O from Baltimore to Washington D.C.

I wish Norfolk Southern (the owners of the 611) still did steam runs

I've seen the J twice on fantrips. Never had the chance to ride behind her. The first time was in the Summer of 1983 she was on an excursion south out of Washington, DC. The second time was in the Spring of 1986 when I saw her in Chattanooga. Both times I was going to an Army school. Will post some photos when I get them scanned.
