Is there any difference in the words..."Scale" or "Gauge"? Scale is the size of the rolling stock and locomotives, while the gauge is the distence between the rails. For example HO Scale can also be called HO Gauge. AW

Is there any difference in the words..."Scale" or "Gauge"? Scale is the size of the rolling stock and locomotives, while the gauge is the distence between the rails. For example HO Scale can also be called HO Gauge. AW But if you said "HO Guage" then you'd be talking about the distance between the rails being a 1:87 representation of the full sized prototype. This would actually apply only to the track itself. If you said "HO Scale" then technically that refers to everything, track, trains, people, cars, trees, structures,....everything, being a 1:87 sized replica of the real full sized prototype. Many people use these two terms interchangably, even though they really are different.
