YOU HAVEN'T LIVED HERE UNTIL... You've tooted at Lionel Trains By Zlati Meyer August 12, 2007 What will you see? On the free tours, 45 minutes to an hour long, visitors learn about the 107-year-old company and its manufacturing process and watch 10 trains traveling around a 14-by-40-foot scene layout. Plus, aspiring Amtrak operators can test their own train-conducting skills on the children's 6-by-8-foot set. OK, what is its history? Lionel Trains was born in 1900 in a New York clothing store, when part of owner Joshua Lionel Cowen's window display -- a toy train that moved! -- seemed to get more attention than the clothes. The company moved to Macomb County 38 years ago. Musician Neil Young co-owns the model-train company, which was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame last October. Is Lionel Trains near Sodor? No, the company is on 23 Mile Road near I-94 in Chesterfield Township, nowhere near the imaginary island where Thomas the Tank Engine chugs. However, Lionel Trains can help you travel to Harry Potter's alma mater -- the company sells a $300 model Hogwarts Express. When are tours? Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m., 3 and 4 p.m.; Fridays at 10 a.m., 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., and Saturdays at 10 and 11 a.m. and noon. For reservations, call 586-949-4100, ext. 9108. The gift shop is open Tuesday through Friday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. All that, even though Lionel Trains is in bankruptcy. Think of it as the Little Engine Company That Could. URL- www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070812/NEWS04/708120600/1006
